The Adult Sunday School is doing a study called “Praying, Meeting God in Daily Life”. The study is led by Dave Taylor. Please join the class to have good fellowship and conversation.

One Great Hour of Sharing Offering is collected during Lent. Each gift helps to improve the lives of people who lack sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. This offering provides us a way to share God’s love with our neighbors in need. One Great Hour of Sharing makes a difference in the world through three programs: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People.

Dear Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church,

I wish to thank you for the Care Package you sent this past Christmas Season. I wanted to thank you in person (like I did the previous year), but unfortunately my travels and the harsh winter we’ve had has prevented this. Thus, please accept this card as my thanks and sincere appreciation for your kind gesture.

Yours truly, Lt. Col. Lee M. Nenortas

Congratulations to Bethanie (Moss) and Chip Platt upon the birth of their son, Charles Alexander Platt, IV.  "Huck” was born March 14, 2019.

TED Talk _ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

How did you end up at MZPC?

Maybe it was in your DNA: your family was longtime Macon County, and this was their church. Maybe it was what your friends did in school, and so you came along. Maybe (this is the most effective method of evangelism) someone invited you! How did you become part of this congregation? More importantly, how did you become a person of faith?

In the Worship Committee and in the Session, we’ve been talking a little bit about what brings people to church. A book our Committee on Ministry liaison, Jason Schiller, mentioned to me, entitled Growing Young, recommended remembering how we ourselves made it to church and to faith, so I tried to dig a little deeper, past the pat answers I sometimes give, and remember how faith became mine rather than something passed on to me, how the magnet of Christ entered my life.

Part of the answer for me is the old DNA answer: it’s just what we did. Church was always part of our life. One of my grandfathers was an itinerant lay Methodist preacher. But I also remember that an invitation to church made a particular impact. My best high school friend, Dave Howell, was part of a local Presbyterian church, and so even though I think my parents may have preferred another congregation, we ended up at First Presbyterian Church of Ferguson, Missouri (yes, that Ferguson).

That’s only part of the story, however. I was “glued” to my little Presbyterian congregation by what was to others a simple thing, but to me was a deep act of acceptance and mercy. I had made a very stupid and very public mistake, something that got my mug on the front page of the Sunday paper, and not in a good way. That evening a man came over from our church, and spoke words that still can cause tears to come to my eyes or a bit of a gulp in the throat: “Just wanted you to know we still love you.”

What brought you to church and faith? Perhaps it wasn’t something dramatic. Maybe it was in your DNA. Maybe, as a taxi driver in Atlanta said, “It just sort of snuck up on me.” Whatever brought you here could be valuable to someone else as well. How could you share it?

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike
